US Experts Provide Residential Brachytherapy Training at Kathmandu Cancer Center

Kathmandu Cancer Center (KCC) recently had the privilege of hosting a team of dedicated medical professionals from the United States, contributing to the advancement of our brachytherapy program. The week-long collaborative effort, featuring experts from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and the University of Texas (UTSW), focused on refining our center's approach to volume-based prescription in brachytherapy.
Brachytherapy, an essential yet specialized cancer treatment modality, often presents challenges due to limited literature, particularly when implementing new programs or techniques. This knowledge-sharing initiative has been valuable in broadening our understanding and expanding our capabilities in 3D image-based brachytherapy for our patients.

Each expert made unique contributions to our program. Dr. Catheryn Yashar and Dr. Kevin Albuquerque, respected key opinion leaders in the field, shared their extensive knowledge in image-based cervix brachytherapy. Their insights into the use of ultrasonography in brachytherapy were particularly enlightening. Dr. Parag Sanghvi offered valuable expertise in skin and interstitial head and neck brachytherapy, while Dr. Dan Scanderbeg worked closely with our medical physics team, helping to strengthen our technical capabilities.
This collaboration has been instrumental in enhancing our proficiency in image-guided high-dose rate brachytherapy, particularly for cervical cancer treatment. The shared knowledge and experience have allowed us to take significant steps forward in providing advanced care to our patients.
